By Mary Clare Jalonick | Associated PressWASHINGTON — The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Gen. CQ Brown as the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, putting him in place to succeed Gen. Mark Milley when he retires at the end of the month.Brown’s confirmation on a 83-11 vote, months after President Joe Biden nominated him for the post, comes as Democrats try to maneuver around holds placed on hundreds of nominations by Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville over the Pentagon’s abortion policy. The Senate is also expected to confirm Gen. Randy George to be Army Chief of Staff and Gen. Eric Smith as commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps this week.Tuberville has been blocking the Senate from the routine process of approving military nominations in groups, frustrating Democrats who had said they would not go through the time-consuming process of bringing up individual nominations for a vote. However, please don’t throw special hires or consultants at the problem. Instead, use the people who are already benefiting from the citizens’ tax dollars to get the EWDD’s house in order.According to the city’s website, the EWDD has a staff of about 28 people, plus the department head. If you hire an additional person for grant applications, you need to fire those who are already supposed to be doing that job. Consider a change in leadership, also.Oakland is my hometown, and in my lifetime, crime has never been this bad. I am saddened to see how Oakland has changed.Ultimately the buck stops with Mayor...Kurtenbach: The SF Giants’ playoff hopes are dead. You only needed to watch one player to understand why

The Giants’ 2023 season is over. Not literally, of course. The Giants still have 10 games to play. But those games won’t mean much of anything. Not after Wednesday’s 7-1 loss to the Diamondbacks.San Francisco needed to go to Arizona — a rival for a National League wild card spot – and win both games in a 20-hour series against the Diamondbacks. They lost both. And they didn’t put up much of a fight in either.Pair that with the feeble efforts in Colorado last weekend, and the Giants no longer have a realistic shot of making the postseason. What went wrong? There was a point this season where this team was 13 games over .500 and looking plucky amongst the best teams in the National League. In the short term, you can point to the team’s terrible road record, feeble offense, or bullpen breaking down. The lack of reliable starting pitching outside of Logan Webb (who receives no run support) was also problematic. But the big picture was in the Diamondbacks’ o...Willow Glen football community defends coach after sideline incident

SAN JOSE – Willow Glen High School football parents have come to the defense of coach Oscar Caballero in the aftermath of a video that surfaced last weekend appearing to show a coach knocking over a member of the crew holding the sideline yard markers. In an email Wednesday addressed to Willow Glen principal Amy Hanna and copied to numerous other parties, including the Bay Area News Group, a parent of a player on the San Jose school’s team said the crew member was violating rules by videotaping and tripped when confronted by Caballero.“Coach Caballero did not assault the parent volunteer,” Bryan Holmes, writing on behalf of the WGHS Rams parents, said in the email. “He walked over to him after multiple players reported to him that he was video taping them and their play calling process and slapped the phone he was video recording with out of his hand, which caused him to step back and trip over the chain.”The Bay Area News Group has seen the grainy video shot from the other side of t...Fantasy plays: Players to start and sit for NFL Week 3

The NFL dialed up the scoring in Week 2 after a lackluster opening week.Teams averaged 22.7 points per game in Week 2 — a noticeable improvement on Week 1.That helped us in fantasy as things began to even out and look a little more like we expected them to look prior to the season.Still, there were plenty of surprises, and while we don’t want to completely ignore our preseason projections, we have to react to what’s happening on the field. There are only 17 games in the NFL season, so we shouldn’t be afraid to fade slow starters in favor of hot names. That’s what we’re attempting to do here. Every week, I’ll be listing out every fantasy-relevant player, sorted by position and bucketed into tiers, with the higher-tiered players deemed more start-worthy. For specific start/sit advice between two players in the same tier, refer to numberFire ’s projection model. These tiers are meant to reflect your typical 12-team, half-PPR scoring formats with only one starting quarterback — though, th...Saints safety Marcus Maye suspended 3 games in connection with 2021 DUI case

He was a member of the New York Jets at the time and signed with the Saints as a free agent during the 2022 offseason.Maye last month agreed to a no-contest plea and six months’ probation.Through two games, Maye is third among Saints defensive players in tackles with 13.
