Wild take Rosemount native Charlie Stramel in first round of 2023 NHL Draft

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 10:37:42 GMT

NASHVILLE — After waiting at the mercy of other teams for a couple of hours on Wednesday night at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, the Wild wasted very little time once they were finally on the clock. They proudly selected Rosemount native Charlie Stramel with the No. 21 overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, and with that, continued to bolster an already deep prospect pool. The most important thing to know about Stramel is that he plays center. That’s long been a position of need for the Wild and they clearly feel like the 6-foot-3, 225-pound Stramel can help them up the middle. He currently plays for the University of Wisconsin and finished his freshman campaign with 12 points (5 goals, 7 assists) in 33 games.Though he won’t contribute for the Wild any time soon, it’s reasonable to think Stramel could make an impact down the road.To the surprise of absolutely nobody, future superstar Connor Bedard went No. 1 overall to the Chicago Blackhawks. Yes, that means the...

Ross Colton talks trade to Avalanche, pending contract situation, favorite moments with Lightning

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 10:37:42 GMT

Ross Colton went to certain lengths to prepare himself for the moment, but it still inevitably hit him with a wall of emotion. He had just gotten to the gym for a Wednesday morning workout in New Jersey and was “sitting on a turf, rolling out,” when the phone rang. It was Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois.“These last couple of days, I’m not gonna lie, have been going by pretty slow,” Colton told The Denver Post. “I never keep my ringer on, but the last three days I had it on, turned up. So when I’m texting, people were mad that I was being obnoxious. But I was just getting nervous waiting for the call.”During his exit interview with Tampa after the season, there wasn’t much talk about next year. “It was said that this is a business, and next year is kind of up in the air,” recalled Colton, a restricted free agent. “So once that was said, I kind of had an idea I was going to be moved.” He just didn’...

Keeler: Nuggets dynasty? For ex-CU Buffs star Derrick White, that would be awesome. Slightly painful. But awesome. “Everybody’s got to hunt them down.”

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 10:37:42 GMT

PARKER — While the 16-year-old inside Derrick White was all shook up, the 28-year-old Boston Celtic on the outside was tempted to pull an Elvis on his television set.“I mean, it was tough to watch,” White, the former CU Buffs and Legend High star told me during a break at his Derrick White Academy basketball youth camp Wednesday at Parker Fieldhouse. “I watched Game 5 (of the NBA Finals). That was the only one I watched.”On this much, all the voices inside White’s head agree. The Nuggets haven’t just set the bar for the rest of the NBA. They are the bar. With or without free-agent super sub Bruce Brown riding shotgun.“I don’t know about favorites or not. That’s out of my pay range,” White laughed. “But they were the best team last year. They did what they needed to do. And everybody’s now got to hunt them down.”If Boston’s Jayson Tatum doesn’t roll his ankle in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Heat, what the hey? Maybe somebody else is king...

President Biden touts success of ‘Bidenomics’

By Josh Boak, Emily Swanson and Chris Megerian | Associated PressCHICAGO — President Joe Biden made his pitch Wednesday to a skeptical public that the U.S. economy is thriving under what he now touts as “Bidenomics” — even as a new poll showed that could be a hard sell as the foundation for his 2024 reelection campaign. In a major economic speech in Chicago, Biden said his administration’s efforts were sparking recovery after Republican policies had crushed America’s middle class. But the poll said only one in three U.S. adults approve of his economic leadership. That 34% figure is even lower than his overall approval rating of 41%, according to the survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.Biden’s approval figures have barely moved for the past year and a half, a source of concern for a president pursuing a second term on his ability to govern and focus on workers. He wants voters to connect local roads and bridge pro...

Belt, Blue Jays tag Logan Webb for five-run first inning, send SF Giants to first road loss of June

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 10:37:42 GMT

TORONTO — Brandon Belt said before this series began that he hoped to homer off Logan Webb, joking that “I just want embarrass his whole family.” The former Giants first baseman sure gave it his best shot, hammering fly balls a combined 739 feet in his first two trips to the plate, but Toronto didn’t need them to leave the ballpark to punch Webb harder than any team this season. The Blue Jays brought nine men to the plate and tagged Webb for five runs in the first inning, putting the Giants into a rare hole that proved too deep to climb out of. Dropping the middle game of their series here, 6-1, the Giants lost for the first time away from Oracle Park since Memorial Day weekend, snapping a San Francisco-era record of 10 straight road wins.“We did what we had to do right there,” Belt said. “Guys like (Webb), if you get on him in the first inning like that, that’s more ideal before he gets locked in.”As for Webb’s perspective: ̶...
