FishboneFishbone (Columbia)The Bellrays Dig Fishbone: Lisa Kekaula, powerful frontwoman with rock & soulers the Bellrays, told us about her love for Fishbone‘s debut EP.(Columbia)Lisa Kekaula: Many years ago a friend of mine said of my record collection, “you have a little of everything and all of Fishbone.” I hadn’t realized it until he said that but he was pretty spot on. It was a collection that I had been building in earnest ever since I first heard Fishbone’s self-titled EP in 1985. It became a creative guiding light and a thumbs up to do music the way I see it first and foremost. Most of the kids in my circle had already seen Fishbone play live in L.A. or Orange County several times before they played close enough for me to make it to a show. In the meantime they released their first EP and I wasted no time bringing a copy home and putting it on. From the beginning of the frenzied vocal harmonies of the school yard taunt “Ugly”, to it’s equally manic ender “Lying As...High school baseball rankings: Bay Area News Group season-ending Top 20

It’s officially grill season. While you’re brushing off the grill grates and prepping your proteins and vegetables, don’t forget to make a bright and zesty sauce for serving. Herbaceous, citrusy condiments, such as salsas and pestos, will complement and elevate your charred grill food. And zhoug is one sauce you should consider adding to your repertoire.Zhoug (pronounced zoog) is a ubiquitous Yemenite condiment composed of fiery green chiles, fresh leafy herbs and ground spices, including cardamom, caraway, coriander and cumin. Toasting and grinding whole spice seeds is worth the extra step and will deliver the deepest, most fragrant flavor to the sauce. The toasting method is easy: Simply heat the whole spices in a small skillet until fragrant, then finely grind them in a mortar or spice grinder. For the cardamom, crack open the pods to release the small dark seeds and discard the pod shells. (To do this, place the pods on a work surface and bang them with the bott...What’s behind Oakland cat’s refusal to go inside the (litter) box?

DEAR JOAN: Our 3½-year-old male cat, Orion, occasionally doesn’t squat in the litter box. He steps in with his behind facing out of the box and lets loose all over the floor. He has been diagnosed with crystals and is mostly on a wet food urinary diet (c/d). The little dry food he does get is a c/d variety as well.We have tried buying litter boxes with doors, but the other two cats refuse to use them. Orion has figured out how to use one box with a door, but seems to prefer the ones without doors.Otherwise his behavior is normal and he’s very affectionate and playful. Do you have any idea why he might be doing this and what we could do to help him stop?We try to clean the boxes regularly and wash them and change the litter at reasonable intervals.— Rod Miller, Oakland DEAR ROD: The first thing that comes to mind is also the easiest to remedy. The litter box might be a tad too small for Orion. While cats seem happy to squeeze themselves into tiny spaces, that doesn’...Pedestrian’s death in Vallejo investigated as homicide
