St. John’s Prep head coach Brian St. Pierre does not often mince words. That is true when it comes to his admiration of senior captain Mason McSweeney.McSweeney, the Eagles’ star defensive end who impacts the game in all three phases, is the heart and soul of an undefeated St. John’s Prep team pursuing its fourth Division 1 state title since 2018.“Mason is the ultimate football player,” St. Pierre said. “We started him as a sophomore and he was already incredibly mature. He’s played so much football now that he is always ready to go regardless of the moment or game.”McSweeney is far from the lone athletic star in the family. Both his parents were athletes in high school and his mother, Melissa, was an all-American field hockey player at Drew University. Mason’s older sister, Caroline, plays field hockey at Assumption. Already dabbling in the waters of ice hockey and baseball, McSweeney’s family pushed him to try out the gri...

The slippery dispute between Asia’s two biggest economies adds to their spat over Japan’s release into the sea of treated but radioactive water from the tsunami-hit Fukushima nuclear power plant. And it has prompted more questions than answers. Here’s what you need to know about the fish and their role in the dispute:WHAT ARE KOI?Koi are beautifully hued and expensive carp formally called nishikigoi in Japan. MADRID (AP) — Acting Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez signed an agreement Friday with a small Basque party that ensures him enough parliamentary support to be reelected, possibly next week. The deal between Sánchez´s Socialist party and the Basque Nationalist Party means that Sánchez should be able to count on the support of 178 legislators, two more than the majority he needs in the 350-seat Parliament to be chosen as the next prime minister. Sánchez has been in office since 2018.On Thursday, the Socialists clinched the support in Parliament of a fringe Catalan separatist party led by fugitive former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont in exchange for an amnesty for potentially thousands of people involved in the region’s failed secession bid.Details of an amnesty bill have yet to be released but it stands to benefit Puigdemont and scores of others, from minor government officials to ordinary citizens, who ran into legal trouble for their roles in Catalonia’s illegal secession a...

Hungary’s Orbán says negotiations on Ukraine’s future EU membership should not move forward

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Hungary’s prime minister said Friday he does not support moving forward on negotiations on Ukraine’s future membership in the European Union, signaling again that his country could pose a major roadblock to Kyiv’s ambitions to join the bloc. EU leaders are to decide in mid-December whether Ukraine should be formally invited to begin talks to join the 27-member union, with Hungary seen as a potential obstacle. Unanimity among all member states is required to admit a new country into the bloc, giving Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orbán, a powerful veto. The EU’s executive branch on Wednesday recommended that Ukraine should be permitted to open membership talks once it has addressed some shortfalls. But in an interview with state radio on Friday, Orbán said the embattled country is nowhere near gaining membership in the world’s largest trading bloc.“Ukraine is in no way ready to negotiate on its ambitions to join the European Union,” ...

TOKYO (AP) — An undersea volcano erupted off Japan three weeks ago, providing a rare view of the birth of a tiny new island, but experts say it may not last very long. The unnamed undersea volcano, located about 1 kilometer (half a mile) off the southern coast of Iwo Jima, which Japan calls Ioto, started its latest series of eruptions on Oct. 21.Within 10 days, volcanic ash and rocks piled up on the shallow seabed, its tip rising above the sea surface. By early November, it became a new island about 100 meters (328 feet) in diameter and as high as 20 meters (66 feet) above the sea, according to Yuji Usui, an analyst in the Japan Meteorological Agency's volcanic division. This aerial photo shows steam billowing from the waters off Iwoto Island, Ogasawara town in the Pacific Ocean, southern Tokyo, on Oct. 30, 2023. Federal regulators take a bite out of meat monopolies

(The Hill) -- Big meatpackers must warn chicken growers about the risks of the deals they're entering into, according to a new federal rule enacted Wednesday. The rule is part of a package of reforms the Biden administration has framed as steps to bring transparency and competition back to the meat industry, Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack said Wednesday. The reforms, he said, take "critical steps in USDA's competition and farmer fairness agenda."Other pieces in the package would direct the federal government to buy meat produced in the U.S. and create a new office to fight monopolies in agriculture.A final part of the rule directs seed companies to display common varietal names alongside brand names — a reform akin to the way buyers of pain relievers know that they can get the chemical "acetaminophen" in the form of Tylenol or cheaper generic alternatives. But for decades, independent farmers have complained about the effects of the rapid consolidatio...
