Soucheray: St. Paul has broken under the weight of lenient policies on crime

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:26:04 GMT

Two days after Michael Brasel, 44, was killed in front of his own house in the St. Anthony Park neighborhood, taking three shots to the chest, the police sirens wailed, again, in St. Paul, this time in the Mac-Groveland and Highland Park neighborhoods.Officers were called to an address on the 1200 block of Juliet Avenue about 3:15 p.m. Monday. Multiple suspects in a stolen Audi tried to break into a vehicle. They were wearing masks. The owner of the car yelled and they scampered back to the Audi and took off.Maybe the car’s owner hadn’t heard about Brasel, for that owner was taking his life in his hands by daring to shout. He could have been killed as remorselessly as Brasel. That’s all Brasel presumably did, give out a shout as somebody was trying to take his wife’s car. He died. Executed is more like it, executed. The shooter has been caught. He is 17. The Pioneer Press learned that the alleged killer was charged in April 2022 with robbing a student in a bathroom at Harding High Sc...

Amy LindgrenSecond Sunday Series – Editor’s Note: This is the ninth of 12 columns on work and disability that are appearing over 12 months — one on each second Sunday of the month, from September through August. As a culture, America is work-crazy. We have high rates of labor force participation and low empathy for those who aren’t “productive.” We call ourselves lazy for leaving work on time and, until the recent lessons of the pandemic, we prided ourselves on going to work sick.What...

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:26:04 GMT

Eric Glader dreams of seeing a massive crowd of people streaming into downtown San Jose’s Historic District next Thursday where they would eat, mingle and listen to music at a “block party” the nonprofit he runs — Urban Vibrancy Institute — is organizing. The idea is a simple one, he says: Create a fun time to showcase the area’s businesses for residents, office works and city employees.“It’s a great way to celebrate these businesses and support those that really need us for survival,” he said. “We can’t get complacent. We have to keep our foot on the gas. We have to lean in where we can lean in.”The May 18 party, which starts at 5:30 p.m., is the first in a series planned around downtown. This one focuses on the Historic District, roughly bounded by the First and Second Street corridors between Santa Clara and San Fernando streets, which includes Fountain Alley, Post Street and the Bank of Italy building.
